String Department
(Violin, Viola, Cello and Bass)

The String Department is affiliated with the Suzuki Association of the Americas and the Institute is a member of ASTA – American String Teacher’s Association. The department teaches a combination of the Suzuki Method, the Bornoff Method &Traditional string methods.

Emphasis on concert holding positions of the instrument and bow, including posture, tone production, intonation and rhythmic patterns applied to Suzuki repertoire of pieces by Mozart, Bach, etc. and other Master composers of music.

Other styles of playing can include jazz, fiddling, and pop. An outreach of the String Department is the SCSO – Shepherd Community Symphony Orchestra and small ensemble program for advanced players of string quartets and Cello Choirs.  

The string season includes three terms of study and a minimum of four performances along with a summer music gap and camp program.  The summer gap program is both ensemble; and private study.

A feature of our string department is a Private lesson program studying with our artist string teachers in-residence.
